Estimates of recreational private access trips comprise approximately 25% of the total trips nationally.
The percent of private access trips in North Carolina by coastal county can range from 0 to 81% and averaged 31%.
Our current survey methodology assumes catch rates of anglers accessing the water through private access sites are not
significantly different than those from public access sites. North Carolina will use surveys of selected individuals (panel surveys)
to see if there are differences between catches from private and public fishing activities.
The panel surveys will be used to identify the major species targeted, areas fished, and evaluate public and private catch rates.
