Flounder gigging is a very popular recreational fishing activity in North Carolina’s waterways, sounds,
bays, and rivers. Currently there are no on-going programs in North Carolina to monitor recreational
flounder gigging harvest. Past gigging surveys indicated that the harvest from this group may exceed
the hook and line catch. Estimates of catch from this sector are needed to better understand the impact this
group has on the overall flounder population and to accurately estimate harvest. The NCDMF will initiate flounder
gigging surveys in 2010 using a list of those who identified flounder gigging activity when purchasing their
coastal recreational fishing license.
