The Recreational Shellfish Survey will supply estimates of catch and participation from this group
(i.e., oyster, clam, and scallop). Recent FMPs have identified a need for these data as recreational harvest
and effort estimates from this sector are completely missing.
During 2007, more than 10% of the Coastal Recreational Fishing Activity Survey respondents reported shellfishing activity.
Initially this group will be surveyed by Internet and mail to determine access areas, locations fished, and estimates of
annual catch and effort. Depending on the magnitude of reported harvest, managers may require more detailed information.
The NCDMF will conduct recreational shellfish surveys during 2010 using a list of those who identified recreational
shellfish activity when purchasing their coastal recreational fishing license.
